FOOD COUPONS
SPECIAL DRIVE LAUNCHED MAYOR’S APPEAL FOR SUPPORT An appeal for a special effort to ensure the success of the drive for 100,000 meat and butter coupons, which was opened in Dunedin yesterday, was made by the Mayor, Mr Cameron. The special effort had been planned to coincide with the visit to New Zealand of the British Lancaster, Aries, said Mr Cameron. This famous aircraft had broken several world records and was in New Zealand on a good-will mission. The air commodore would take back to the British people details of this special coupon drive, which was being held throughout New Zealand. ‘•I fully appreciate the difficulties experienced, particularly in small families, in the saving of coupons,” the Mayor continued, “and I realise that one and all have made definite sacrifices in this connection. But the figures in Otago have slipped badly in the last few weeks, and I am sure that, during this special coupon effort, Otago will not only retrieve its position in the national list, but will head the list in New Zealand, and that in the message taken to Great Britain by the Aries will be included the sentence, ‘Otago-headed the list.’ “During the war years and since, Otago has broken record after record in what may be termed efforts of sacnfice for our kith and kin in Great Britain,” said Mr Cameroon. “As the Mayor of Dunedin I make a special appeal to the citizens of Dunedin and of the district to save more coupons—that is, butter and meat coupons—within the next fortnight than have been saved since the rationing period came into operation. During the next fortnight you will be advised of the details of the campaign, and I am sure that the appeals which will be made to you in various ways will not fall on deaf ears.”
