The Auckland Cup winner, Expanse, is to be retired from racing. The Joker, who is engaged in the TallyHo Handicap, has been off the scene since December of last season. The Riverton Racing Club is in a strong financial position, and an increase of stakes is promised this season, The Nizami gelding Cipher has been placed in training again. He was erratic as an early two-year-old, but settled down under S. Barr’s tuition.

The Foxbrldge colt Majesty, wh6 won four times and ran a second last season as a two-year-old; shaped 'well in his first sprint on the track for his preparation as a three-year-old. Arabian Night, who had to drop out of his engagements at the Grand National meeting through striking himself in his work, may be produced again at the Dunedin spring meeting. The fields engaged at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, to be held on September 7, contain more than ample material, to furnish a successful opening for the Wingatui season. Joygiver finished up last season with four wins on end. In his last win Joygiver 9.7 beat Platform 9.7 by two lengths in the King George Handicap at Wingatui. In the Tally-Ho Handicap Joygiver meets Platform on 71b worse terms. Page’s Raid won the Enfield Steeplechase with 10.5, and this was followed by wins in the Beaufort Steeplechase 'with 11.0 and the Lincoln Steeplechase with 10.0. He has received 11.13 in the Otago Hunt Cup. Page’s Raid meets Spanish Main on 171 b worse terms' than when they met in the Beaufort Steeplechase, in; which Spanish Main finished fourth. Wellington Racing Club The report and balance sheet to be presented at the annual meeting of members of the Wellington Racing Club shows that £61,412 10s in stakes was distributed at the three meetings last season, and for the seven days of racing the totalisator handled the record sum of £1,369,461. The profit and loss account reveals a net surplus of £2721 3s after making provision for £4OOO for taxation and writing off £4360 19s Id by way of depreciation. During the year very necessary repair work to the understructure and the sealing of the decking of the main and members’ grandstands was completed, and to offset this expenditure a call of £SOOO was made on the deferred maintenance reserve. This account now stands at £IO,OOO. Baffles

The imported horse Baffles, who is at the stud in Southland, was got by the great sire Blandford from Waffles, the dam of Manna, a winner of the English Derby and a sire of winners Waffles was got by the Martagon horse Buckwheat from Lady Mischief, by St. Simon. Baffles sired winners in Carey, Conspiracy, Riverlands Roe, Sylis, Hullabaloo, Baffling, Baffles Rex, Dark Morning, Peggy O, Sweet Baffles, Frustration, Frustrate, Prince Baffles, and, last but not least, Boolamskee, one of the best stayers seen out during the past two or three seasons. Blandford, the sire of Baffles, topped the list of winning sires in England for three seasons, and in 1934 got winners of £75,706, the highest record achieved in England since 1901 Blandford was not a flash-in-the-pan success at the stud, as he got Derby winners in Trigo, Blenheim and Bahram. He was not only a sire of winners, but also a sire of successful sires, and his line is breeding on in the United States and other parts of the world.
