DISASTROUS FIRE

BRISBANE MEAT WORKS (Rec. 10 p.m.) BRISBANE, Aug. 26. Damage estimated at hundreds of thousands of pounds was caused by a fire at Borthwick’s meat works in Brisbane to-day. The freezing and chilling rooms were damaged, and a large quantity of meat awaiting shipment to England was destroyed. About 2000 tons of meat was in the rooms, but it is not known yet how much was lost. At the height of the fire the British freighter Clan Colquhoun, which was at the wharf for loading meat, was moved into mid-stream and taken to another wharf out of danger. The employment of more than 400 men is affected by the fire. It will be some time before the plant can resume operation.
