ST. JAMES PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH The annual congregational meeting of St. James Church was held on Wednesday evening in the Clark Hall. The Rev. Mr Dewar presided over a good attendance. Mr Dewar in his address referred to the difficqlties the church had experienced for so.ne time past owing to the lack of a settled minister, and expressed his appreciation to all those who had maintained the church’s activities. On behalf of the board of management Mr J. W. Clearwater presented the annual report, which showed that, in spite of the difficulties experienced, regular services had been maintained each Sunday throughout the year and there had been a slight increase in membership. The treasurer, Mr J. A. Galloway, submitted the statement of receipts and expenditure, which showed the buoyant position of the church’s finances. Mr Dewar reported that he had appointed six new members to the board of management. For the P.W.M.U. Mrs Paget reported on the work carried out during the year. The Sunday School report, presented by Mrs Johnson, the superintendent, stated that the various classes had been well maintained. The alteration from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. for holding Sunday school on Sunday mornings had resulted in an increase in the attendance. There were now 110 children entered on the cradle roll and efforts were being made to increase the number. It was reported that the Girls' Auxiliary, under the direction of Miss Diack, had maintained its activities throughout the year. During the evening musical items were rendered by Messrs Catherine Ross and Hazel Brown, and Mr Roderick Cameron. SCHOOL DENTAL CLINIC
At the request of the Karitane School Comrhittee a meeting of 19 delegates from 14 school committees in the Eastern District was held on Thursday evening in the Palmerston School to consider the present position of the dental clinic service operating in the district. Reports were received from all schools concerning the difficulties experienced where children had to travel to either of the two existing clinics at Palmerston and Seacliif In many cases small children had to walk home several miles after receiving treatment, often getting home at a late hour It was decided to take steps to secure a mobile dental clinic for the area, and accordingly a delegation consisting of Messrs Peden, Johns and Watson was appointed to wait on the Otago Education Board with a view to obtaining its support for the project when the matter is placed before the Health Department.
