ILLEGAL ACTIVITY

SHOOTING AND FISHING PENALTY SYSTEM CRITICISED “ There is not one constructive remit in the whole of the three foolscap pages," said Mr J. W. Smeaton at the monthly meeting of the Otago Acclimatisation Society last night, when remits proposing amendments to the Animals Protection and Game Act which have been approved since 1937 by the council of South Island Societies came up for discussion. These remits, it was stated, had hot been given effect to by the Department of Internal Affairs on the grounds that legislation of a special nature could not be entertained during the war period, “They all provide for increases in the penalties for the illegal shooting of game or illegal fishing, but our duty is to stop it, and all the increase in the amount of fines will not stop it." Mr Smeaton said. He added that the acclimatisation societies should take steps to stop illegal activities.
