BRIGHT DISPLAY

WIN FOR UNIVERSITY A University • A defeated Dunedin by 13 points to 6 in a fast and open game at Carisbrook, both sides throwing the ball about freely. For the greater part of the first half the Dunedin forwards showed more dash in the loose, but G. D. Gordon’s ability, to secure the ball from the majority of the scrums kept the Dunedin backs from functioning to the extent the Light Blues did. G. J. Moore opened the scoring for University with a penalty goal after five minutes’ .play, and C. Todd brought the scores level when he went over for a try for Dunedin from a loose rush. The result of the match was really decided in the last 10 minutes of the first spell,, when the University backs raced away from the opposition, Moore (second five-eighths) and I. J. Botting (centre) combining in several fine movements. A strong break by Botting paved the way for a try by K. J. O'Connor, which Moore converted, and Moore, who showed’ considerable penetration, finished off passing with a try and added the major points himself.

University led by 13 points to 3 at halftime, but with Todd, J. Barry and D. O'Gorman prominent, the Dunedin forwards gave their backs more opportunities in. the second spell, and W. Lawrence. E.

Collins and M. McKerchar were noticeable in. bright passing movements. The only points, ’however, came from a penalty goal which S. F. Easton kicked for Dunedin, but in the final minutes of the game the crowd was given a thrill when T. Kawe ran through from near his own line and passed to H. F, Drake at half-way, J Gwyhne carried on, but was tackled at the corner by McKerchar, who raced across from the opposite wing. The respective full-backs, Kawe and Easton, gave enterprising displays. The best of the University forwards were O’Connor and J. M. Foreman. ’ Mr G. Little was the referee.
