OFFER OF SHIPMENT QUESTION OF LICENCE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 16. American ships may bring coal to New Zealand from the United States if the licence to be applied for by an Auckland coal and cartage firm to import 5000 tons of Pittsburg coal is granted by the Government. A member of the firm said to-day that an offer from an American combine of 5000 tons of high-grade coal had been received, subject to the Government issuing a licence. It would be possible to charter American tramp shipping, although British shiDS were practically unavailable. The only disadvantage was that the freights would have to be paid in dollars
