DESPERATE SITUATION

UNITED STATES WORKERS EFFECT OF PROFITEERING WASHINGTON, Aug. 15. Mr Philip Murray, president of the Congress of Industrial Organisations, again requested President Truman to call a Labour Management Conference. Mr Murray declared that American workers are caught in a desperate squeeze created by unchecked profiteer-

ing, and unless action is taken to protect living standards the stage will be set for a new depression. Mr Murray added that the necessity was now even greater than a month ago for a conference to cope with the need for immediate wage increases to offset rising living costs. President Truman will leave tomorrow on an 18-day yachting vacation in New England waters.
