COASTAL STORM

WEST COAST LASHED (P.A.) GREYMOUTH, Aug. 12. A north-westerly storm this evening prevailed along the West Coast and inland as far as the main ranges. Rail and road communications were interrupted on the western side of Otira. Trains are expected to resume at midday to-morrow. A telegraphic interruption was caused between Reefton and Murchison. Rough seas recurred to-day after the departure of the steamers Holmlea, Kiwitea, and Poolta and the entry of the Kaimai and the auxiliary vessel Piri. The first three were all coal laden, the Kiwitea taking this year’s record cargo of 3000 tons of coal for Auckland. The gale is abating but the rain continues.
