GIFT PARCELS

REPORTS OF CONFISCATION INDIGNATION EXPRESSED (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 12. Reports from Britain that private gift parcels in excess of one a month sent to any one person from New Zealand are confiscated by the Board of Trade without notification to the recipients or senders have been referred to the Postmaster-general, Mr Webb, by the Mayor of Auckland, Mr J. A. C. Allum, who said in a telegram that he would appreciate any information which could be communicated to the public. The Mayor said in an interview that complaints of parcels having been confiscated by the Board of Trade came as a great shock to him. It would be hard to imagine a more despicable act than the confiscation of gifts prepared in New Zealand by loving hands and often at great sacrifice to the senders. “To say that the rule of one parcel a month is designed to prevent some people receiving preference is arrant humbug,” said Mr Allum. “All we can de here is express our indignation and see that we get the maximum number of gift parcels to our loved ones in the Homeland.” The matter, however, was one between the people of the United Kingdom and their Government, Mr Allum declared.
