TARGETS POISONED
BIKINI ATOMIC TESTS NEW RESEARCH PROBLEM BIKINI, Aug. 12. Admiral Bandy, homeward bound after the atomic bomb tests, has issued an' official summary showing that the underwater charge sank more than four times the tonnage sent down by the mid-air charge. Five ships were sunk in each test, but the second bomb’s toll included three capital ships, and totalled 95,220 tons, compared with 22,620 in the first test. The second test, in addition, damaged four craft heavily, seven moderately and eight lightly.
No damage or negligible damage was done to .50 other ships. The most damage from the underwater blast was to the hull, plating, interiors or fittings. The aerial burst caused widespread top-side damage. Admiral Blandy added that most of the ships after the second test became untenable for varying periods due to poisoning. This seemed to call for the development of counter-rr.easures to combat radio-activity “if atomic warfare is actually to pertain.”
