SERVICEMEN MOVE IN

BRICK HUTS COMMANDEERED INCIDENT IN BRITAIN LONDON, Aug. 11. When 30 ex-servicemen and their families living in rooms at Chalfont St. Giles heard that 250 brick huts in a nearby camp were being made ready for the Italian wives of Polish soldiers, men sent a lorry through the village and collected bedding and furniture and moved in, says the Daily Express. Other people from Chalfont are expected to follow suit, and there are plans for establishing a shopping centre, a dance hall, and a theatre. Captain Bouquet, chairman of the local Council Housing Committee, had repeatedly asked the War Office to allow it to take over such camps, as it had 1600 applicants awaiting council houses. ..... The Chalfont incident is not isolated. The Times says that the War Office and Health Ministry officials are at present having conferences on commandeering incidents elsewhere. The legal position is not clear, but, strictly speaking, the commandeers are trespassers.
