Mr G. W. Lane travelled to Christchurch by the express yesterday. Mr J. Sutherland Ross left yesterday for Christchurch. Mr A. S. Cookson was a passenger for Christchurch by the express yesterday. The Director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr H. M. Patrick, who is to retire on superannuation on September 30, will pay an official visit to Dunedin on August 26. Dr R. Gardner, of Dunedin, has been elected an associate member of the Institute of Chemical Engineer's, London. Mr Maurice Ralph, of Messrs J. and N. Tait, is at present in Dunedin making final arrangements for the concerts by Todd Duncan in Dunedin next week. Owing to the continued grounding of all Pan-American Constellation aircraft and the absence of shipping, the New Zealand Educational Institute has been compelled to cancel the visit of its representative, Mr D. Forsyth, to the World Teaching Profession Conference in New York.

Mr O. T. Gorrie, manager of the British Traders’ Insurance Company, Ltd., at Dunedin, will leave on Wednesday to assume control of the Christchurch branch of the company. He will be succeeded by Mr F. H. Jackson, of the Wellington branch.

Among the passengers who left Londori on July 26 by the Shaw Savill liner, Akaroa, are. Dr C. E. Hercus, Dean of the Medical Faculty of the University of Otago, Mr W. R. Sinclair, general manager of the Otago Daily Times Company, and Mr James Hogg, general manager of McLeod Bros., Ltd. The Akaroa is due at Auckland on August 31. Mr A. W. Simpson, formerly supervisor of the postal branch at Hastings, commenced duty as supervisor of postmen at the Chief Post Office, Dunedin, yesterday. Mr C. Pont, .of the Chief Post Office. Invercargill, has taken up his position as supervisor of the postal branch at the Chief Post Office, Dunedin. At a meeting of the Management Committee of the btago Rugby Football Union last night, the president (Mr A. H. Cameron) referred with, regret, to the illness of Warrant Officer J. C. Kearney, a member of , the Kiwi team, who was at present in hospital. It was decided to write to Warrant Officer Kearney, expressing hopes for his speedy recovery. Squadron Leader L. H. Trent, • V.C., D.F.C., of Nelson, is returning to the Dominion in the liner Akaroa, which is due at Auckland from London on August 31. He is accompanied by his wife and their young daughter, Christine. The Victoria Cross was awarded to Squadron Leader Trent last March for his outstanding leadership while attacking, in daylight a power station in Amsterdam in May, 1943. Shortly before the award was made he was transferred from the R.A.F. to the R.N.Z.A.F.

The following passengers from Dunedin will leave Wellington on the Rangitiki when she sails to-morrow for London, via the Panama Canal and Newport News: Mr and Mrs J. Johnson, Messrs T. M. Dunlop, H. H. Ferguson. C. L. Cargill, J. Moore, W. Lonie, and B. Walker.

Passengers who left for the north by air yesterday were: Mr C. G. Palmers. Mr R. S. Glendinning, Mr F. G. Laycock, Mr K. M. Soo, Father B. Harrington, Mr R. J. Powley, Mrs K. R.valls, Mr W. A. Morrison, Mr A. Fraser, Dr J. W. Costello, Miss D. Bezett, and Dr J. Ramsay for Wellington, Mr and Mrs T. Knox and Mr J. G. Robbie for Auckland. Those who arrived from the north were: Mrs P. Garden, Mrss P. M. Green, and Mr J. P. O’Connor from Auckland. Mr. H. M. Purand from Palmerston North. Mrs S. Cadman, Mrs M. G. Sutters, Mr B. A Lewis,-Mr H. B. Martin, Mr A. P. Grant, and Mrs M.
