Miss Zona Howarth, of Wanganui, is visiting Dunedin. Miss Anne Salmon left during the week for Wellington, where she will join the Rangitiki, en route for England. At the monthly meeting of the gardening circle of the Otago Women’s Club to-day. Mr ,T. Black will give a talk on daffodils.

Mrs N. Sutherland, of Wellington, is the guest of her daugther, Mrs J. L. Jones, of " The Larches,” Anderson’s Bay. Mrs E. H. Calder, of View street, will leave to-day for Wellington to join the Rangitiki on her way to England. Mrs John Mitchell, of Ross Place, Lawrence, has returned to her home, after a short stay with her sister, Mrs F. Hoffman, of Dunedin. Dr and Mrs F. J. H. Barr, of Pollock street, will leave Wellington to-morrow for Edmonton, where Dr Barr has accepted the position of supervisor of the department of dental radiology and diagnosis at the Dental School of the University of Alberta. Mrs P. H. Jones, Provincial President of the League- of Mothers, left yesterday morning for Invercargill to preside at opening meetings of three new branches of the League of Mothers. She was accompanied by the provincial secretary, Mrs L. D Mclver, Mrs J, Davidson and Mrs C. G. Hedge of the provincial executive and Mrs Wedekind. ENGAGEMENTS Lindsay—Ross The engagement is announced between Douglas William, son of Mr and Mrs W. Lindsay, of " Springfield ”, Allanton, and Frances Gertrude, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. T. Ross, of Ramsay street, Dalmore. Wilton—Moodie The engagement is announced between Selwyn, youngest son of Mr and Mrs J. H. Wilton, of Papanui road, Christchurch, and Mollie, younger daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Moodie, of Cole street, Dunedin. W.D.F.U. The Otago Provincial Executive held its quarterly meeting in the Farmers’ Union board room this week. Mrs J. M. Charles occupied the chair. Others present were: Mesdames W. H Elliott (Dominion president), W. Annan (Clyde), J. F. Drake (Berwick), J. Radford (Cromwell), R. J. E. Smith (Wedderburn), G. Renwick (Middlemarch), W. J. Reid (West Taieri), W. E. Wright (Owaka), H. Holgate (Barnego), A. Finch (Milton), J T. Williams (Kelso), J. C. Wilson (Macandrew Bay), Miss M. Dallas (Dunedin), and the secretary. Mrs H. Leatham.

Mrs Charles welcomed the members, especially Mrs Wilson and Miss Dallas, new members on the executive, and also took the opportunity of congratulating Mrs Elliott, who was re-elected Dominion president, and Mrs Annan on her re-elec-tion to the Advisory Board. Mrs Renwick stated that Miss Dodds had been engaged as a sewing woman in the Middlemarch district. In the Middlemarch, West Taieri and Portobello branches the services of the A.C.E. tutors, Misses Audrey Baker and Jocelyn Cook, had been engaged and were proving very satisfactory. The branches throughout Otago had subscribed towards a sewing machine for the rest home at “ Te Kiteroa.”

Food for Britain was being sent from the branches through the Navy League and the, A.C.W.W. Members were saving fat for Britain, but found, it most difficult to have the fat taken from their districts. There is also the problem of obtaining suitable containers. Mr D. T. Martin addressed the members on the saving of fat and said he hoped to have some information concerning the collecting of fat in the country districts at the next meeting of the Famine Relief Committee. Mrs Drake was appointed to represent the WD. on the Adult Education Committee. Miss Dallas on the Health Camp Committee, and Mrs Leatham on the National Council of Women.

Owing to the shortage of housekeepers, only six positions had been filled during the last quarter. Only one housekeeper was working, but temporary help had ben engaged to fill two positions. Appreciative letters have been received from countrywomen who have benefited by the services of the housekeepers. ' Mrs Elliot reported that suitable premises for headquarters had been found in Wellington, and they were • awaiting the decision of the Land Sales Committee. Mrs -Charles gave an interesting report on the Dominion Conference and the twenty-first birthday celebrations, when 1000 members from all parts Of the Dominion travelled to Wellington to take P art - ' . .. Mrs E. • Skinner, who represents the countrywomen on the Centennial Council, reported on the circular letter that had been sent out to W.D. and W.I. secretaries. These letters gave the findings of the Co-ordinating Committee on suitable ways of celebrating the centennial, and asked for suggestions. Mr W. R. Brown, representing Heritage,” addressed the members and asked for their co-operation in providing a holiday for the children of deceased servicemen, and asked if members could help in this project by taking the children into their homes during the Christmas vacation. Mrs Charles thanked Mr Brown, and asked the members to inquire through their branches and to send in the names of any members who would be willing to take a child for a holiday. The names should be sent in to the secretary, who will send them to " Heritage.” Clutha Branch.—Mrs W. E. Moffat presided, and welcomed a new member. Members contributed about 100 small tins of fat, which will be sent to the Navy League at Dunedin. The “Te Kiteroa ” sewing machine fund was increased by a donation of £1 from Alexandra and 10s from Galloway. The fund, totalling £24 4s, is now closed, and Central and South Otago branches, which so willingly and generouslv helped to supply the Waimate Rest Home with the much-needed sewing machine, are gratefuly thanked. Solos were contributed by Mrs Brown, and afternoon tea concluded the meeting.
