RACING IN AUSTRALIA
FIRST IN WINS AGAIN (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug 11. The New Zealander Gay Fort ran disappointingly in spite of heavy backing in the Austraiiar Steeplechase at Caulfield. He was backed to favouritism, but was obviously sore and did not make a race of it until near the end. Only seven of the 14 starters finished. In Sydney another New Zealander, Night Robe, was backed to first favourite in spite, of recent disappointing showings, but also failed to gain a place. The only New Zealand success of the day was that of First In in the Malakoff Stakes at Caulfield. Following are the results:— AUSTRALIAN STEEPLECHASE. About three miles and a-half.
Victory March, 10.10 (Godfrey) .. .. 1 Quixotic, 11.0 (Hall) 2 Walladale, 10.7 (Morley) 3 Fourteen started. Two lengths and ahalf, half a length. Time, 7min 3jsec. MALAKOFF STAKES, One mile and a-half. First In (N.Z.). 9.3 (Didham) .. ~ 1 Coin, 7.1 (Dean) 2 Macclesfield, 6.11 (Smart) 3 Twelve started. Two lengths, half a length. Time, 2min 33jsec.
