EGGS PLENTIFUL
RATONING ALMOST ENDED STEADY FALL IN PRICES Eggs are becoming so plentiful again in the Dunedin district that a ration equivalent to two eggs and a-half per person per week will operate next week. This ration is practically sufficient to meet all needs. Prices have dropped approximately Is in each grade since the peak winter prices were reached, and it is expected that the summer prices will be introduced towards the end of the month. •Even though eggs are in good supply at present, the quantities coming forward are not reaching the production figures for the corresponding periods of last year. The winter has been a particularly favourable one for poultry but, even so, hens have not been responding to the mild weather as might have been expected.. Feed shortages might be an explanation for the lower production figures. Changes in food caused by the introduction of the higher extraction rate of flour and a 25 per cent, cut in pollard supplies probably have had their effects. There is an indication, however, that supplies of eggs are improving and that by the end of the month the figures might be on a par with those ruling at the corresponding period last year. With the probable introduction of summer prices at the same rates as last season, a suggestion is made to consumers who preserve eggs to obtain their requirements early. It was pointed out to a Daily Times reporter yesterday that eggs are in much better condition in the spring months than later in the season, and that it would be of great assistance to producers if eggs for preserving were purchased in the months of September and October.
