STATE THEATRE

"WATERLOO ROAD” London life In war-time provides an interesting background for the Gainsborough film, “ Waterloo Road,” which constitutes the main attraction in yesterday’s new programme at the State Theatre. London street markets, a popular palais de dance, a public air-raid shelter, a typical London family’s home, the station Itself, a pin table saloon, and Waterloo road public houses are some of the settings of the story. There Is also the terrifying background of London under fire at the height of the 1940-41 blitz. The crash of bombs, famous buildings and the accompanying terrors of an air raid are used to intensify the drama of the story of a soldier who leaves camp to straighten out his married life. The picture contains plenty of good oldfashioned humour, and includes a tremendous fight. John Mills, Stewart Grainger and Joy Shelton are in the featured roles, and at the head of a distinguished supporting cast are Beatrice Varley, Alison Leggad, Arthur Denton and a host of others. Box plans are at the theatre and Begg’s.
