THE BAPTIST UNION

ASSEMBLY IN AUCKLAND OWN CHURCH NOT AVAILABLE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 9. For what is believed to be the first time in the history of the Baptist Church in New Zealand, the annual assembly of the New Zealand Baptist Union is expected to meet this year in Auckland in the church of another denomination, the Pitt Street Methodist Church. Since the secession from the Baptist Union of the Tabernacle Church in Auckland on May 10, 1944, the union has been deprived of the use of the largest Baptist church in Auckland. It is understood that endeavours are being made to bring about a reconciliation between the Tabernacle and the Baptist Union and there is a possibility that if this is done before October the assembly will be held in the Tabernacle. The decision to sever the connection of the Tabernacle with the union was made following the suspension of the minister of the church, the Rev. Dr Alexander Hodge, from membership of the union.
