PLASTER SUPPLIES

NEW ALLOCATION BASIS Suoplies of plaster will in future be allocated to fibrous plaster manufacturers on the basis of manpower employed in the various factories. This assurance was given to a deputation which waited on the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, the Minister of Supply, Mr D. G. Sullivan, and the Minister of Works, Mr R. Semple, in Wellington this week. Owing to shipping difficulties, it was pointed out that no immediate relief could be expected. It would be approximately three weeks before material in transit could be milled in Auckland and transported to other parts of the Dominion. Meanwhile, some 150 fibrous plasterers, comprising about 85 per cent, of the skilled men, were away from their normal occupation, and therefore lost to the country’s housing programme. _ , The secretary of the Building Trades Federation, Mr N. N. Hildreth, said he was hopeful that allocations of supplies on a pro rata basis would at least enable fibrous plaster manufacturers to keep their plants going.
