OTAGO DEVELOPMENT

Sir, —Your sour editorials on Mr Semple’s 10-year plan make one wonder to what extent such an attitude of mind in Otago generally may be responsible for the deplorable stagnation that has existed here over the past few years. The main themes of your comment, which might be summed up as “ We thought of it all before, anyway," is falsified by the fact that the huge Coal Creek scheme (which you did not refer to) had not been previously advocated locally. The president of the Chamber of Commerce, whose remarks compete with your own for lack of generosity, also does not refer to Coal Creek. Is It possible that you are both so blinded by political prejudice that you cannot see that this scheme is something really big for Otago: that, with evermounting coal costs, the possession in 10 years time of almost unlimited cheap electric power will give this district a supreme economic advantage! That it is above politics?—l am. etc., S. J. T.

August 5. [For longer than Mr Semple has the Daily Times realised and called attention to the hydro-electric potential In Central Otago; and on May 10, the day after the announcement of the Coal Creek scheme appeared, we welcomed it in an editorial. — Ed. O.D.T.]
