FREEDOM FEDERATION
NO POLITICAL AFFILIATION FREE ENTERPRISE UPHELD (PJU WELLINGTON, Aug. 8. The Freedom Federation was not a political party, nor was there anything secret or conspiratorial about it, said the chairman, Mr J. T. Martin, of Wellington, replying to-day to an article in a Labour Party publication this week which was headed, “ Organisation under New Name awaits Election,” and attributed to Mr Martin the statement that “ the organisation will probably spring into existence before the election.” Mr Martin said the organisation had not been set up against the present Government, but would express itself as the occasion demanded in accordance with its proper aims, but not necessarily at election time or any other time. Whatever Government was in power there was a tendency towards State interference with free enterprise which the organisation would fight. The objectives of the organisation. Mr Martin said, were the promotion and protection of free enterprise in New Zealand and elsewhere. It was seeking the support of free enterprise by adherence to the principles of equality in law, equality of opportunity, reward for initiative, the encouragement of and privilege for thrift, the abstinence of the Government from unfair competition with free enterprise, complete freedom of the press and radio, and an equitable distribution of profi+s. with the interests of the consumer and labour safeguarded to the end that more things were supplied to more people, thus ensuring maximum production at the highest possihle level of wages.
