GAS SUPPLIES

POSITION IN THE NORTH COAL STOCKS SERIOUSLY DEPLETED (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 8. Some North Island towns face a complete shut-down in gas supplies during the coming week-end unless coal comes speedily from Westport and Grey mouth. Gas pressure in Wellingtion was reduced throughout to-day.

Coal stocks in Wellington are considered by the Mines Department to be sufficient for two or three days only, and already the main services depending on coal are economising. A conference is being held between the Gas Institute of New Zealand, the Coal Controller, and the Shipping Controller.
