New Development Expected

BRITISH CABINET DETERMINED

Will Not Surrender Mandate

(Rec. 1 a.m.)

London, Aug. 8.

An important development is expected in the Palestine situation. Members of the Cabinet are standing by in case they are called together at short notice.

The Cabinet yesterday decided—First, that in no circumstances will the British Government surrender its mandatory responsibilities for Palestine; and, secondly, that even if American assistance is not forthcoming the greatest possible effort will be made to implement as much as possible of the British and American experts’ recommendations.

The Daily Herald’s political correspondent, reporting this, adds that it is recognised that no suggestable solution will secure full Jewish and Arab approval.

The responsibility, therefore, rests on Britain as the mandatory Power for making an effort to break the existing deadlock.

The Cabinet postponed further decision on Palestine when a message was x*eceived from President Truman to the effect that the United States Administration was actively considering the plan for federation.
