INDEPENDENT SERVICE
NEWS FOR AUSTRALIA HEAVY COST INDICATED (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 8. It was estimated that the independent news service to be established by the Australian Broadcasting Commission would cost well below £200,000 a year, the Postmaster-general, Senator D. Cameron, told the Senate before it passed the Broadcasting Bill, which requires the commission to establish such a service. The Depuy Leader of the Opposition, Senator Lackie, estimated that an independent service would cost up to £250,000, compared with £83,000 a year under the service recommended by the Australian Broadcasting Commission itself but rejected by the majority of the Parliamentary Committee on Broadcasting. ' Opposition Senators asked the Gpvernment to supplement the existing news service from the daily press. This was in line with the commission’s recommendation. During the debate the Australian press was heatedly attacked by Labour "Senators and defended by the Opposition. The Bill has now passed all stages in the Senate.
