BERTHS ACROSS TASMAN
NEW ZEALANDERS IN AUSTRALIA HUNDREDS OF APPLICATIpNS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Aug. 8. The difficulties being experienced by people in Australia who wished to travel to New Zealand were outlined to-night by some of the passengers who arrived in the ship Tasman. They said hundreds of New Zealanders were awaiting berths to the Dominion, and many had made their applications months ago.
One of the passengers said he applied for berths for his family three months ago in Melbourne, and when space was offered in the Tasman he had to travel by train to Brisbane. Other New Zealanders travelled from Melbourne with him and some from Sydney. He said it had been reliably stated that 800 New Zealanders in Melbourne and 1300 in Sydney were awaiting passages to the Dominion.
Lack of information about the possibilities of obtaining passages was disturbing many people who wished to return to New Zealand, said one woman. She had found difficulty in obtaining information on shipping movements and it appeared that all a person could do was to apply for a berth and then trust to luck. Accommodation difficulties in Australia added to the problems.
