HOUSING PROBLEMS

HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS When the rector of the Waltaki Boys’ School (Mr J.i T. Burrows) reported to the Board of Governors at its monthly meeting yesterday afternoon that the school was faced with the loss of a valuable teacher through his inability to find suitable accommodation for himself and his family, he raised a lengthy discussion among the board members as to what steps could be taken to provide the teachers with houses. Mr J. C. Kirkness stated that Oamaru stone was an excellent building material when used properly. The Housing Department had stated that the delay in building was due to the shortage of materials. The board should advise the Education Department that material was available in Oamaru in Oamaru stone.

Messrs W. M. Cooper and W. Kinder also stated that local white stone was of excellent quality. Mr Cooper suggested that the board should intimate to the department that it might be a deciding factor.

Mr Kirkness raised the point as to whether it might not be possible for the board to raise a loan from the Housing Department and proceed with a building programme of its own.
