VALEDICTORY A farewell smoke concert was tendered to Driver H. Voice in the Railway Social Hall on Saturday night by the railway staff, employees and suoerannuitants. The chairman. Mr Stanley Gray, spoke eulogistically of Mr Voice's many sterling qualities. both as an emoloyee of the department and as a resident in the district, and expressed regret that he had been transferred from Palmerston. The stationmaster, Mr S. E. Smith, made a presentation of a bevelled mirror. Mr Voice returned thanks.
GOLF A challenge match between teams from Oamaru and Palmerston, played over the week-end on the Ardligh links, resulted In Oamaru winning five games to the local side's four. Details ..of the play are as follows: For Oamaru: Turnbull beat Wolstenholme 2 up and 1 to play, Dyson beat Jolly 4 up and 3 to play, McGregor beat R. North 3 up and 2 to play, Willis beat Rustin 3 up and 2 to play, Harrison beat Marshall 3 up and 2 to play. For Palmerston: G. Hudson beat McDowell 2 up and 1 to play, R. Hudson beat Bradley 5 up and 4 to play, H. North beat King 3 up and 2 to play, Vinicombe beat Rbbins 5 up and 3 to play. Ford (Oamaru) and Cochrane (Palmerston) all square. YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB A good attendance of young farmers met at the club meeting on Monday evening in the Municipal Buildings. An interesting talk was given by Mr C. Nimmo, who, with other young farmers from the South Island, had made a tour of the Taranaki district in June and July. The speaker related his experiences, and gave some useful hints on farming methods there. The chairman, in closing the meeting, conveyed to Mr Nimmo the members' appreciation of his talk. SARAVATI CLUB There was a good attendance of members of the Saravati Club, held on Wednesday evening in the Municipal Buildings, when Mrs Low occupied the chair. The programme of song and instrumental music artistically rendered by several contributors was entitled “ Music for Fun." A vocal duet by Misses N. Kilgour and D. Sutherland and pianoforte solos by Mrs S. E. Smith and the Misses' N. Sutherland and Blow, together with a violin solo by Miss McKenzie, comprised the musical items. A five minutes’ sketch was presented by Mrs Coutts and Mrs Richardson, while Mrs Dale and Mrs Coutts gave an interesting reading. BOROUGH COUNCIL The Palmerston Borough Council held its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, when the Mayor. Dr T. T. Thomas, occupied the chair. Others present were Crs G. Ross, J. Jones, A. McGregor, J. W. Spillane, W. G. Clearwater, and L. B. Rassmussen.
A vote of sympathy was carried with Cr M. J. McCabe in the loss of his sister.
A petition was received from the residents of Puraknui and Mihiwaka districts seeking the council's support for a petition to the Railways Department to altei the time of departure of the DunedinPalmerston train from 4.42 p.m. to 3.42 p.m. on Monday to Thursday, inclusive. The Otago Hospital Board wrote advising that the amount apportioned to the council for the year ending March 31, 1947, for hospital purposes was £489 3s lid.
It was decided to ask the Mayor of Oamaru to represent the council at the annual conference of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association at Nelson in October. The National Patriotic Fund Board wrote regarding 11 band instruments loaned to the board during the war. It advised that eight of the instruments, which had been handed over to the army, had been sent overseas and lost during the operations on Crete. Of the remsining instruments, no trace could be found, but the matter was being investigated. For the instruments lost in Crete it was proposed to reimburse the council.—Received. The Reserves Committee reported on tree-planting operations, and it was decided to plant the southern portion of the cemetery with suitable trees. The Cemetery Committee recommended that the charge for the upkeep
of burial plots by the council should be £lO a year for single plots and £5 for each additional plot.
The Ministry of Works wrote approving of Mr T. G. Graham’s application for the erection of buildings on his property to the estimated value of £230. Received.
Gomplaints were made by Mr O’Reilly regarding the state of the street in front of his property, and also by Mr R. H. Walsh in connection with surface water from adjoining properties flowing over his section.—Referred to the Works Committee for action. Accounts amounting to £455 12s 3d were passed for payment.
