HYPOCRISY ALLEGED

FRANCO’S CHANGED ATTITUDE WAR SYMPATHIES RECALLED LONDON, July 26. “ I cannot bear to see Franco posing as the Allies’ great friend. During the war he systematically sympathised with the Axis; now Spanish propaganda purports to make him appear our best friend,” said Ihe former Ambassador to Spain, Lord Templewood, in a speech at a function celebrating the publication of his Madrid war-time reminiscences.

He added: “ I criticise the Spanish Government, but I have few words

good enough for the noble Spanish people who, I am convinced, throughout the war were on our side ”

Lord Templewood emphasised that the least profitable method was to threaten the Spaniards. “ When I left Spain the Franco regime was tottering, and threats from outside since have strengthened it.”
