CAMP ORANJE
HOUSING FOR SERVICEMEN RETENTION FAVOURED BY GOVERNMENT (P.AJ AUCKLAND, July 27. “A crisis has arrived and the attitude of the Government is that we want to retain these buildings for transit housing because this problem takes precedence over everything else." This statement was made by the Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, to-day when he met the president of the Returned Services Association, Mr A. P. Postlewaite, members of the R.S.A. executive, and the chairman of the executive of the Auckland Hockey Association. Mr C. G. White, to discuss the future of Camp Oranje at Remuera. The issue was whether the buildings there should be used for housing returned servicemen or demolished to'provide grounds for hockey. On the Prime Minister’s suggestion he will discuss the matter further with the Mayor, Mr J. A. C. Allum, on Monday, together with representatives of the R.S.A. and the Hockey Association. Mr Fraser expressed a wish that the Hockey Association would agree with the Government’s attitude in view of the appalling conditions in which people were living. He said he would go to the full length to assist the hockey players by providing alternative grounds.
