MILTON

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION Jhe Toko High School Parent-Teacher Association held a successful and instructive evening in the Milton Hall on Wednesday evening, when Mr D. Cockerill presided over a capacity attendance. Mr Cockerill extended a welcome to Mr G Andrews, the senior secondary assistant, who has recently taken up his duties at the school. The function opened with the screening of a film used in the schools of New Zealand depicting the people, industries and products of Sweden and the value of such films as teaching aids was very apparent. The chairman introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr A. P. Roydhouse, supervisor of physical education in Otago and Southland. Mr Roydhouse dealt with the development of physical education in New Zealand during the past 30 years, and his address was followed by a film depicting a typical half-hour lesson In physical education.

The “ Brains Trust ” session proved very interesting and the range of questions asked by interested parents was wide and varied. Some of the subjects dealt with by the trust were the teaching of writing and spelling, the playing of hockey, the provision of “ free ’ text books and equipment, the time at which school concerts should be held, the administration of education, comparisons between the old and the. new in education, and the 40-hour week. The question master was Mr G. Sim. and the Brains Trust comprised Miss I. Allan (Parent-Teacher Association), Messrs R. Bruce (School Committee), W Grant (Toko D.H.S.), and A. P. Roydhouse (physical instruction branch). Supper was served at the close of the evening. Y.W.C.A. The fifth annual meeting of the Milton Y.W.C.A. was well attended, Mrs James Gray presiding. The meeting opened with the hymn “ The Church is One Foundation,” a Bible reading by Mrs Bowie, and a prayer by Major E. Blaikie. Mrs Gray extended a welcome to Mr's R. W. S. Botting (president of the Dunedin Y.W.C.A.), Miss Aldridge (secretary), Miss Ashton (assistant national general secretary). and representatives of different organisations in the town. Miss Brash, matron, reported that the past year had been a very successful one, and the staff problem was now settled. The girls had held socials and dances and had raised sufficient funds to purchase a new machine for the hostel. The resignation of Mrs D. McDonald was accepted with regret and the committee was re-elected as follows, with power to add:—Mesdames Gray, Wethey Vidal, Lockhart, Mitchell. J. R. Wilson, Scott, H. Wilson, North, Keinan, and Bowie, and Miss Melville. Mrs Botting congratulated the committee on the progress made. Miss Ashton gave an interesting talk on the early days of the Y.W.C.A., which, she said, was established in England 95 years ago. The Mayor (Mr C. Keinan) paid tribute to the work of Mrs Gray, Miss Brash, and members of the committee. Greetings were extended by the Rev. J. J. Lewis (Ministers’ Association), Mr J. Murray (Bruce Woollen Company), and Mrs D. Cockerill (League of Mothers). , BOWLING CLUB The annual meeting of the Milton Bowling Club, held on Wednesday evening, was attended by 24 members. Mr J. Cuff presided. The balance sheet presented, showed that the credit balance was £2B Os 4d, and that £l4 17s 6d had been paid to the credit of the club’s National Savings account, bringing that account up to £64 18s. The work of the Social Committee had added £24 Os 5d to the club funds. The club’s assets stood at £290 for land, £SOO for buildings, £64 18s for National Savings, and £2B Os 4d credit balance The liability was a mortgage for £3OO. The president presented the trophies won during last season, as follows:—Champion singles, Mr G. H. Clark: junior singles, Mr E. Mackie: champion pairs, M'ssrs W. Lyall and W. Dee; handicap doubles, Messrs L. Jane and J. T. Wilson. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President. Mr P. W. Gray; senior vice-president. Mr W. Dee; junior vice-president, Mr A. Vidal; secretary, Mr W. Finch: treasurer, Mr R. M. Rutherford: auditor, Mr C. J. Clery; committee— Messrs G. H. Clark, F. W. McDonald. 11. Wilson, and L. Jane; Social Committee Messrs H. Wilson. W. Finch, L. Jane, G. Smith, E. Tiffany, P. Gray: green supervisor, Mr R. Price: selectors, Messrs J. Cuff and A. Vidal; delegates to the South Otago Bowling Centre, Messrs Gray and Dee; Match Committee—Messrs Gray, H. Hood. J. T. Wilson, and Dee.
