One of the weirdest cases of the screen’s sleuth, Charlie Chan, is unfolded in •• Black Magic,” the stellar attraction in yesterday’s new programme at the Strand Theatre, with Sidney Toller in the role of Charlie Chan. The. second feature is "The Beautiful Cheat,” a comedy-drama co-starring Bonita Granville and Noah Beery, jun. Beery is seen as the sedate young professor who endeavours to reform a wayward girl, and Miss Granville appears as the “ untamed ” young lady. Actually, however, she pretends the part in her own effort to " reform ” the professor. Through the aid of romance, both reformations succeed in the film s surprising climax. The first episode of a thrilling new serial, “ Secret Agent X-9, was also screened.
