NURSING PROFESSION

HIGHER PAY ADVOCATED DIFFICULTIES OF HOSPITALS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 26. A 40-hour week for nurses was advocated at a meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board last night by Mrs Knox Gilmer, as the solution to the present serious shortage of nurses. She suggested a scheme by which nurses worked a 44-hour week with overtime payment for the extra four hours. Mrs Gilmer pointed out that the board had to compete in the labour market. If nurses were given something like a proper reward for their services, more girls would come forward. The first step should be extra payment for time over 40 hours. The chairman, Mr H. F. Toogood, said that while his heart agreed, his head did not. If nurses were given a 40-hour week now the hospital would have to reduce its accommodation by 400 beds.
