EXPENSIVE LUXURY
HOUSEHOLD REFRIGERATORS * SCARCER AND PRICES HIGHER ■' 5 (Rec. 10.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, July 25. Refrigerators will be “ even more definitely a luxury ” than before the war, according to a Tariff Board report which states that the grave misgivings as to whether the manufacture of domestic mechanical refrigerators is developing on sound economic lines are justified by the evidence. The indications are that the selling prices necessary to return profits to Australian manufacturers will be higher than before the war. The board considers that probably the market is too small to carry the existing manufacturers economically. The greatest demands are expected in the next few years while the war arrears are being overtaken, but after that the most optima istic estimate given at the inquiry was 65,000 refrigerators yearly. Machines which cost £SO before the war cost £9O to-day.
