SHEARERS’ WAGES
SLIGHT INCREASE FOR SEASON New wage rates for shearers and shed hands during 1946-47 have been announced. A committee' comprising Messrs G. E. F. Woods, Acting Government Statistician; L. C. Gardiner, re-, presenting the Employers’ Union; and L. C. Hair, representing the New Zealand Shearers’ Union; met recently and considered the rates payable under the shearers and shed hands' award. The rates were fixed in accordance with the price movement of greasy wool, determined by the Government Statistician’s index number for the export price of wopl. All the new rates show a slight increase when compared with those for the previous season. The new rates are; Shearers, by hand, with machines, and of lambs,' £ 1 16s a 100, with rations: shearers of stud sheep and hogget rams, rate and a-half; shearers of doublefleeced sheep, rate and a-half; shearers of ranis, other than hoggets, double rate; pressers, £5 7s a week or 2s lid an hour; all other shed hands, £4 17s a week or 2s 9d an hour; cooks, for 12 men, £5 17s a week or 22s a day. Provision was made that men employed on crutching should be paid 8s 6d a 100. All employees, if not provided with rations, must be paid an allowance of 5s a day. The wage rates for cooks will be increased by 2s 6d a week for each additional man after 12, and if more than 18 men are employed an assistant cook must be employed at a rate or £5 2s a week, or 18s a day. If more than 28 men are employed the rate of payment ' for cooks may be decided by mutual arrangement.
