LACK OF NURSES
HOSPITAL DIFFICULTIES
APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 25. So serious is the shortage of nurses in the institutions, controlled by the Wellington Hospital Board that the * waiting list for the Wellington Public Hospital has been suspended until further notice. Unless there is an immediate improvement, more beds in the general hospital will have to be closed. This statement was made by the superintendent, Dr J. Cairney, last night.
Lfist January) he said, it had been decided to close 300 of the 1910 beds at Wellington, Hutt. and Silverstream. but the demand for beds now exceeded that of January by over 127. The nursing staff, on the contrary, had not increased, and the incoming classes of student nurses averaged 30, instead of the required 60. Another 100 nurses were needed to prevent a further reduction in the already restricted hospital service. Dr Cairney appealed to trained nurses and V.A.D.’s to offer their seryices. either for whole or part-time nursing.
