GOVERNMENT DIVIDED 1

LOCAL BODY PROPOSALS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 9. “ It is apparent that a sharp division of opinion exists in Government circles, and even in the Cabinet, over the implementation of the Local Body Committee's recommendations,” said the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr J. W. Andrews, who is also president of the Municipal Association, at a meeting of the Lower Hutt City Council last night.

“The Prime Minister, Mr P. Fraser, and the Minister of Health, Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, are opposed to the proposal,” Mr Andrews said, “ but it is certain that if an unfettered vote is taken in the House the portion dealing with hospital taxation will be adopted. Until then no relief can be hoped for.”
