STATE HOUSES
THIRTY-FIVE COMPLETED
ADVANTAGE TAKEN OF DRY WEATHER Thirty-five State houses, 20 of which are at Corstorphine, hhve been completed in the Dunedin area in the past three months, and of these six, which will be ready for occupation within a few days, have been handed over to the States Advances Corporation for allocation to waiting tenants. It was stated yesterday, in response to inquiries by a Daily Times reporter, that the work at Corstorphine had not at any time come to a standstill. Shortages in some lines, such as plaster for wall linings, and cement, had caused delay in the completion of some of the houses, but the builders had transferred the men engaged to outside work in order to take advantage of the fine weather, and they had not been idle. This policy had enabled so much progress to be made in building other houses that it was confidently expected that more houses would be completed at Corstorphine and elsewhere in the Dunedin area in the next quarter than in the past three months. Another effect of the method adopted was that work could now proceed inside the houses in wet weather. In order to economise in the use of cement to enable more essential work to be completed in State houses, it is understood that the laying down of concrete paths has in some cases been temporarily postponed.
