FIRMER VALUES FOR BEEF (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, July 9. The yardings were larger both in the fat and store sheep sections at Lorneville to-day, but values in most cases were equal to those of recent sales. Values for fat cattle improved up to £2 a head. The fat sheep yarding of 1092 was 360 better than last week, and consisted of ewes and wethers in almost equal numbers. Most of the wethers were light and unfinished, but for better-quality sheep the market was similar to last week’s, light and unfinished sorts being 2s easier in the early stages of the sale. Ewes were definitely easier, but they firmed before easing to finish on a par with late rates. Passings in all classes were frequent Good-quality mediumweisht wethers brought 43s to 465, handyweights 40s to 42s 6d, lighter weights 36s to 38s, and unfinished sorts 33s to 355. Good-quality light-weight maiden ewes made 33s to 35s Gd, good-quality young butchers’ ewes 28s to 30s, and mediumweight sorts 25s to 26s 6d. In the fat cattle section 120 head, comprising mainly light-weight steers and heifers, were offered. Heavy-weight bullocks afid cows were in short supply. After a few pens had been sold, values were about £1 a head better than those ruline last week, and as the sale progressed prices improved. In the concluding stages they were as much as £2 a head better than the general average of the previous sale. Good-quality mediumweight bullocks made £lB to £l9 10s, liandv-weights £l6 10s to £l7 10s, and light-weights £l4 to £ls 10s. Extra prime heifers brought to £2O ss, goodquality mediums £ls 10s to £l7, lightweights £l3 10s to £l4 10s, and small £9 'ss to £lO 10s. Prime quality mediumweight cows made £l4 10s to £l6, mediums £l2 to £l3, light £9 15s to £ll. and unfinished to £7 10s.
