HOUSEWIVES INCENSED
BREAD RATIONING PLAN PANDEMONIUM AT MEETING LONDON. July 8. Nearly 1000 members' of the British Housewives’ League, at a mass meeting in Central Hall, Westminster, passed a vote of no confidence in the Government’s food policy, and passed a resolution demanding a public inquiry into the country’s food situation.
Loud cries of “ Coward! ” greeted the announcement that Mr John Strachey had declined an invitation to attend the meeting. He replied by letter, stating that he had nothing to add to what he had already said in the House of Commons, and enclosed a cony of Hansard.
Pandemonium broke out at the end of several speeches, which included phrases such as “Bread rationing is the last straw, and we are not going to sit down and see our children crying for food this winter.” Shouts of “ Traitors! ” and “ Throw them out! " greeted persons who tried to speak in favour of rationing on the grounds that it was fully justified by the world situation.
The chairman, when many league members clamoured to form a procession to the House of Commons, persuaded them to refrain, and announced that 300.000 signatures protesting against the bread rationing had so far been obtained.
