RUGBY UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

NO MATCHES ON AUGUST 3 A decision not to play any Rugby football matches in Dunedin on August 3, the date of the Ranfurly Shield match between Otago and Southland at Invercargill, was reached at the fortnightly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Union last night. The president, Mr A. H. Cameron, occupied the chair. Unauthorised Players Advice was received from the town clerk that the City Council's Reserves Committee had granted authority for the caretaker at the Otago Boys’ High School to order persons off the Littlebourne Ground on Sundays when in his opinion there was a danger of damage to the turf. Mr D. C. Jolly said that this was the only way in which the City Council could legally prevent the unauthorised use of grounds, even On Sundays. ’ Players Over Age The Union Fifth Grade team was ordered to be deprived of its win against King's High School because of the fact that it had played two boys over age. No action was taken with regard to other matches won by the team while playing the two boys as the wins gained were by large margins. Result of Matches Reversed The result of the Second Grade match between Southern and Training College, won by Training College by 1G points to 14, was reversed, the match being awarded to Southern. The Southern Club appealed on the grounds that the referee wrongly awarded a try to Training College. The referee stated in a letter that, in the incident questioned a Training College player touched the ball against a goal post above the ground. The executive decided that the ruling was incorrect. General The following transfers were granted:— T M Turnbull. Hikurangi to Kaikorai: G. Beattie, Ranfurly to Taieri; R. Costello, Taieri to South Taieri; E. A. Newman, West Taieri to South Taieri; I. Harris, Clinton to Brighton. Messrs R. W. S. Botting, D. C. Jolly, and J. W. Pearson were appointed an Entertainment Committee in connection with the visit of the Kiwi team for its match against Otago on July 31. Permission was granted for the John McGlashan first fifteen to play Gore at Dunedin on July 24 Waimate at Waimate on August 2, and the Alexandra District High School at Dunedin on August 20.
