GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
THE BRITISH OPEN TITLE SAM SNEAD SUCCESSFUL LONDON, 'July 5. The American, Sam Snead, won the British Open Golf Championship with a total of 290. A strong wind to-day for the third and fourth rounds made golf difficult, and the scores were considerably higher than for the first two rounds. Snead started the final round unimpressively. He had a 6 at the fifth, and reached the turn in 40. but he was given plenty of scope by his rivals’ gradual downfall, and ended the round steadily.
Snead. Pulla, and Rees were leading with 215 at the end of the third roui.d Both Bulla and Rees crashed in the final round, taking 79 and 80 respectively. Locke ruined his remaining chances by -aking five s’s for the last six holes. The leader at the end of 36 holes, Cotion, did not produce his earlier form, and finished with a final round of 79.
