While the Royal Navy was demolishing the instalations at the German naval base at Kiel, fire broke out on the 10,000-ton cruiser Hipper, and spread rapidly from stem to stern. The photograph shows the burning vessel sunk at her berth. Near the Hipper lie many other Nazi ships which were sunk or scuttled in the last days of the war.
