WOMEN’S INTERESTS

NATIONAL COUNCIL MEETING Mrs A. A. Fairbairn presided at the July meeting of the National Council of Women. Before commencing the business of the evening she referred to the bereavement suffered by Lady Hutchison, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Congratulations were- extended to Miss L. Roberts and to Miss Jean Begg on their recent decorations. The council was particularly pleased to welcome Mrs Bechurvaise. a member of the Geelong committee of the National Council of Women in Australia. Greetings were received from the Geelong Council, and the guest was asked to convey greetings from Dunedin on her return. A welcome was also extended to Mrs Pottinger, representing the Waitaki Ex-girls’ Association, a newly-affiliated society, and to Mrs Rust and Mrs P. A. Smith, associate members. The president stated that the Dunedin branch of the National Council of Women had been invited by the Mayor and Mayoress, Mr and Mrs D. C. Cameron, to hold the August meeting at the Town Hall, delegates to be the guests of Mr and Mrs Cameron at supper. It was hoped,that Miss Havelaar, the Dominion president, would be present at that meeting. Delegates were instructed to obtain from their societies the names of women considered suitable to sit on Government committees and boards and to represent the council at international conferences. Miss Griffiths and Miss-Hayward were appointed liaison officers between the Vocational Guidance Association and the New Education Fellowship respectively and the National Council of Women. D'scussion took place on the use of spark extinguishers on railway engines, and a statement of the position will be asked for. Mrs Ewing read interesting extracts from the pamphlets, ’’ Women in Council regarding the United Nations’ Organisation and the woman movement.
