POLICE PAY
INCREASES RECOMMENDED COMPENSATION FOR LONGER HOURS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 5. In consequence of the recommendations of the Economic Stabilisation Committee regarding extra pay for members of the Police Force as compensation for the hours of work necessitated by the shortage of men, married constables will, on joining the force, receive £466 a year. At the end of three years’ service it will be increased to £497, at nine years to £515, at 14 years to £525, and at 20 years to £545. When the rank of sergeant is attained pay will be increased to £579. Two years later it will be increased to £592, and four years later to £6lO. A senior sergeant will receive £647.
The Police Association had previously agreed that it was not practicable, in view ol the present shortage of men, to introduce a 40-hour week, but it has agreed in the interim for time worked in excess of 40 hours to be paid as overtime. The feeling among the men is that the Government has met the position generously. The majority would prefer a 40-hour week, but a number also welcome the extra remuneration. There has been a general improvement in Police Force conditions and pay during the past few months, particularly in respect to promotion.
