GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

THE BRITISH OPEN TITLE COTTON IN BRILLIANT FORM LONDON, July 4. On fairways and greens drenched by a thunderstorm, Henry Cotton returned another round of 70 to lead the field in the British Open golf championship. He again played brilliantly in every department of the game, being particularly deadly around and on the greens. » . , The American, Sam Snead, also returned a 70 to-day, putting him second place. The Welshman, Dai Rees, was the early leader to-day with 142 after a record-shattering 67 in the second round. Heavy rain had taken the run off the fairways, making the course longer and one for the mighty hitters. Rees’s performance, therefore, was Iruly a fine one. He was out in 33 and home in 34. His score included six threes, 11 fours, and one five. Yesterday’s leader, Bobby Locke, with a 74, to-day fell to equal fourth with the American, Bulla. The Australian, von Nida, putted poorly and returned 76. C. H. Ward obtained a hole-in-one at the 163-yard eighth hole. Thirty-eight players with scores of 155 and better qualified for the two final rounds to-morrow.
