ELLOUGHTON GRANGE STUD, TIMARU 1946 SEASON SHE CLASSICLY-BRED STAYING AND COURAGEOUS RACEHORSE ROYAL ARCH (14) BAY HORSE, BRED IN ENGLAND IN 1941 ROYAL ARCH, who is a typical English weight-carrier and stayer, is a horse of remarkable breeding, as he is line-bied to ADMIRATION, dam of that Queen of the Turf, the invincible PRETTY POLLY winner of 22 races out of her 24 starts, and £38,597 in stakes. His sire, COLORADO KID, a grand racehorse and stayer, continues to meet with great success at the stud He is a grandson of Pretty Polly. MOLLY BAWN, the dam of ROYAL ARCH, and of six other winners, is a great-granddaughter of MIRANDA own sister to Pretty Polly. ROYAL ARCH is not only superbly bred for' success ai the stud, but he was a high-class winner in England, both at 3 and 4 years of age, winning at U miles, 11 miles, and at 15 furlongs as a four-year-old, when he was narrowly beaten over 21 miles He was both a great weight-carrier and stayer, and was credited with being a very courageous horse. ROYAL ARCH retired from the racecourse perfectly sound, a great asset in a stallion. He is closely related to many great racehorses and famous sires, including the St Leger winner TEHRAN the best stayer In England last year, and recently sold as a stallion to an English Syndicate for £IOO,OOO. ROYAL ARCH started only three times as a two-year-old, running fifth at his first start to the brilliant filly Picture Play, the ultimate easy winner of the One Thousand Guineas, and was prominent at his other two starts. AT 4 YEARS Won Grove Handicap, 11 miles, 8.0: 14 starters. Won Crathorne Handicap, 1 mile 7 furlongs, 8.5; 7 starters. Ran second North of Trent Handicap. 2 miles 2 furlongs, 8.11; 17 starters COLORADO KID (14), the sire ot ROYAL ARCH, was also a great weight cairier and fine stayer, winning from 7 furlongs to 21 miles and £9462 in stakes At 3 years he won 6 races over 1 and 11 miles, at 4 years he ran third in the City and Suburban Handicap, and was afterwards unbeaten, winning the Kempton Jubilee Handicap, the Royal Hunt Club Cup (from a field of 28) Chesterfield Cup, 11 miles, carrying top weight. 9.6, and the Doncaster Cup, 21 miles at w.f.a He is by PHALARIS' noted son, COLORADO (3), from BABY POLLY, by SPEARMINT (1) (son of CARBINE), from PRETTY POLLY by GALLINULE from ADMIRATION Colorado Kid is the sire of winners over all distances, but most of his stock stay well the average distance of his winners, from 3-year-olds upwards, being 10.38 furlongs. MOLLY BAWN (14), the dam of Royal Arch, is the dam of seven winners to date, and her three-year-old daughter, Fair Profit, was recently bought for the National Stud for 5600 guineas The family Is one of the best in the Stud Book, and in addition to Pretty Polly (One Thousand Guineas, Oaks and St Leger) and Tehran (St. Leger) has produced in recent years the unbeaten Italian champion, Donatello 11, now at the stud in England, the great sire and racehorse.
