TROTTING NOTES

By Sentinel Jottings The death of the imported mare Slapfast is reported. A. Holmes has trained winners of over £17,000 this season. Bonny Clare, who is engaged at Timaru, has won three times in 11 starts this season. She went 3min 16 2-ssec when she ran second to Limerick Pride in the Rakaia Trot, run in May at Ashburton. A member of the Bonny Logan family is Loyal Scott, a two-year-old bay gelding by U. Scott from Loyal Bonny, by Grattan Loyal—Bon Rey, by Rey de Oro—Bonilene (imp.). Loyal Scott in owned by his breeder, Mr J. R. McKenzie. Ribbonwood The question has been asked how Ribbonwood would compare with present-day champions. D. J. Price once informed the writer that Ribbonwood could put up a mile in 2.2 on the five-furlong track at Addington, where he beat Fritz. Ribbonwood went 2.9 in an exhibition mile, but it was only a “ jog ” for him. He could cut quarters and half-miles out at a 2min clip or better. Ribbonwood wore 2oz quarter boots in front, but otherwise travelled without boots or gear. On the present track at Addington Harold Logan has been timed to go final half-miles close to 58 Bred to Win D. Teahen’s candidate for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes of 1947 will be a bay filly by Dillon Hall from Roydon's Pride, therefore a half-sister to Certissimus and Desmond’s Pride. This filly is already a fine trotter, says “ Ribbonwood,” although she is one of very few of her sire’s stock to favour the trotting gait. A rising two-year-old bay colt by U Scott from Roydon’s Pride will be Teahen’s candidate for the 1948 Trotting Stakes, and a rising yearling bay colt by Light Brigade from Roydon's Gift will be the stable hope for the Trotting Stakes of 1949. This is certainly looking a long way ahead, but Teahen’s sympathies have always been with the trotter, and his enthusiasm for this colt is good to see. He describes the Light Brigade foal as a ‘‘deep-barrelled, long fellow with a great action.”
