SHIPMENT OF BANANAS

FRUIT IN POOR CONDITION ADVANCE IN VEGETABLE PRICES A shipment of bananas, comprising 1500 cases reached the marts during the week. These were railed to Wellington from Auckland and brought to Dunedin by the Holmglen. The fruit arrived in a mixed condition, its condition, in fact, being the worst of any bananas received here for some considerable time. The bananas in some instances were also badly chilled, and difficulty is being experienced in ripening up the green fruit. Retailers who secured supplies will be fortunate if they break even on the deal. Apples are being released from the Government depot on three days per week, and stocks are cleared in the marts to retailers from day to day. A difficulty is still being experienced in placing small sizes, which are much in evidence. Definite advice regarding the next shipment of Australian oranges has not yet been received, but it is expected that supplies should be here towards the middle of the month. , , Lemons are in short supply, with only a few cases of the Meyer variety coming from the North Island. Pears are released only once a week from the Government depot. The market could do with larger supplies. Tree tomatoes and passion fruit are bringing high prices. Supplies of hot house tomatoes are slackening off. A few Gros Colmar grapes, grown at Maori Hill, are bringing extreme prices. Onions have been advanced £1 a ton above the Government fixed price. The fixed price for potatoes has been advanced by 10s per ton. Carrots have been advanced by 2s to 12s 3d per cwt; parsnips by 2s to 17s 3d per cwt, , , Cauliflowers have firmed in price, but the market receded slightly at the weekend. Choice quality lettuce are wanted, but inferior are hard to place. Cabbages have a better inquiry. Pumpkins are in heavy supply from Hawke’s Bay.
