BRETTON WOODS

SIGNING OF AGREEMENT GOVERNMENT OPINION DIVIDED (From Ottr Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 5 “ The Government has shelved the question of .(he Bretton Woods agreement for two years, and showed no signs yet of openlv stating its attitude and debating it in the House,” said Mr J. A. Roy (Oppii.. Clutha) during the Address-in-Reply debate in the Hons- of Representatives today. Mr Roy said that he understood the Labour Party was definitely divided on the matter. Mr H. E. Combs (Govt'., Wellington buburbs) said that the National Party had discussed the Bretton Woods proposal and was apparently rather sharply divided as to the wisdom of New Zealand signing the Bretton Woods charter. The Leader rff the Opposition, Mr S. G. Holland, had not been prepared to say what ns would do about Bretton Woods if he had the responsibility of leading the country, which was entitled to know where he stood. He hoped that there would be a discussion on Bretton Woods. His own view was that the man who hoped to lead the country should have given his views on that question, and also on the Dominion’s relations with other countries.
