OBITUARY
MISS E. P. TENNENT Miss Edith P. Tennent, whose death occurred on Friday, June 7, at Lower Hutt, was, from the years 1925 to 1938, lady superintendent of Dunedin Hospital, a position she filled with dignity and distinction. . . Taking her general nursing training at Wellington Hospital during the years 1914-1918. followed by maternity training at Alexandra Home, Miss Tennent later filled the positions of sister and subsequently sub-matron in her old training school, relinquishing the latter post on her appointment to Dunedin Hospital. . Possessed of a strong personality and imbued with the true ideals of her profession, she set an inspiring example
to all nurses. Her influence, kindly help, and unswerving attention to her work, will remain as an enduring memory, and nurses who trained under her guidance consider themselves indeed fortunate. Her interest extended to the Physio-therapy Department of the Dunedin Hospital, and, when approached, she was ever willing to help with sound advice. In 1937 she was awarded the M.8.E.. While in Dunedin she was a member of the Patients’ and Prisoners’ Aid’Society and also of the local council of the Registered Nurses’ Association, and for many years was a valued member of the Nurses’ and Midwives’ Registration Board, and a member of the Dominion Executive of the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association, rendering in each case outstanding service. Her wide vision and high ideals made her contribution to nursing education and to the nursing profession generally a very valuable one. „ After her retirement Miss Tennent lived at Lower Hutt, but, on the outbreak of war, she was approached to act as Commandant-in-Chief of New Zealand Red Cross Voluntary Aids, a position which entailed much organising and strenuous travelling throughout New Zealand. In 1942, for health reasons, she found it necessary to relinquish this post, but up until the time of her death her interest in her old profession never lagged.
